Active Faults of the World. There is an ever-increasing need for a better understanding of regional seismic hazards, particularly in developing parts of the world where major building projects are planned and there is a huge migration of people to large cities that are at risk from earthquakes. Disasters in recent times, such as the earthquakes in Japan and Haiti, are chilling proof of the 5/5(1).

The North Boquerón Bay–Punta Montalva fault zone has been mapped crossing the Lajas Valley in southwest Puerto Rico. Identification of the fault was based upon detailed analysis of geophysical data, satellite images, and field mapping.

The fault zone consists of a series of Cretaceous bedrock faults that reactivated and deformed Miocene limestone and Quaternary alluvial fan sediments. The Rock Valley fault zone is one of several relatively small (20–40 km long and several kilometers wide) east-north-east-trending left-lateral fault zones in the southwestern part of the Great Basin (fig.

Some of the east-northeast-trending fault zones are sites. General background Earthquake sources and hazard. The Puget Sound region (Puget Lowland) of western Washington contains the bulk of the population and economic assets of the state, and carries seven percent of the international trade of the United States.

All this is at risk of earthquakes from three sources: A great subduction earthquake, such as the magnitude M 9 Cascadia earthquake. Stone () reported the occurrence of C water in a well on the northern Hassayampa Plain. On the basis of water and soil geochemical surveys and a thermal gradient survey she postulated that the warm water is rising at the intersection of a northwest-trending range bounding fault and a northeast (?)-trending basement fault.

Near x = À, y = À, there is a to km-wide northeast trending region with shallow low velocity, km/s at 6-km depth, underlain by high velocity, km/s at km depth (MTB. long fault block bounded on their eastern and western sides at least par- tially by outward-dipping normal faults (Hauser et al., ; Spencer et al., a) and at the northern and southern ends.

Geologic characterization of Yucca Mountain and its surroundings has taken more than 2 decades of investigations carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey, the national laboratories, and numerous academic and consulting groups.

The object of this work—to quantify the environmental hazards that might attend a proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain—has produced a body. The Border Ranges fault system is a complex fault system that has focused deformation during a long Jurassic to Neogene history with periods of both strike-slip and dip-slip motion (Pavlis and.
